Canisters & Recipe Box

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Canisters & Recipe BoxMy wife wanted simple kitchen canisters and a matching recipe box. Made these over 25 years ago, they've been repainted a couple times. She's an “all homemade” cook, so they've gotten a lot of use.Canisters
1/2” MDF, just glued together, no fasteners
The bottom and top plates are rabbeted to engage in all four sides
I cut each side as one piece for the container and lid, then cut the lid segment off each side piece so the lids match exactly for a tight seal when closed. You can feel the air pressure when putting the lid on, nearly airtight.
If you notice in the third picture, there's a red dot on the lid and the container. Turns out my assemblies are not perfectly square, so the dot indicates the alignment that fits perfect. :) Also that nasty looking red inside the lid, overspray from a time when we painted them red (90's kitchen theme)Recipe Box
1/8' hardboard, with tiny 1/16” rabbets for all corner joints
Assembled only with glue, I never expected it to last this long with those tiny 1/8” glue joints
Bottom and top rabbeted into each side.
Made it as one close box, then cut the top off.
recessed the hinges, which was fun in wood only 1/8” thick
Inside is kinda ugly with that raw rough masonite, but it works and my lady hasn't complained.

Hand-Harvested Sea Salt Serving Box

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Hand-Harvested Sea Salt Serving BoxIn our travels we've acquired various hand-harvested sea salts whose various containers have added to the clutter on the table. As a skill-building project I decided to make this 12x3x3 box with some curly maple I've been saving. I resawed the 4/4 maple to make the top and bottom and used Brazilian Cherry for the sides. The mitered corners are splined with the curly maple. The piston fit individual compartments are made with 1/4 hard maple. That way I can swap out salts without having to dump the whole box. The half moon handle is mortised to the elevated piece of the cherry which is their to provide contrast and visual separation from the curly top. It's attached to the top with brass screws. I'll put silica gel packets in each compartment to keep the salt from hydrating. Finish is Tung Oil. Individual compartments have no finish.

Turning Time - Legacy Willow Oak

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Turning Time - Legacy Willow OakTurning Time
White Oak hourglass Frame w/ Willow Oak Accents. 6” diameter x 10” tall.
Finished with Minwax spray lacquer. This is an art project partially made from an ancient 7' diameter Willow Oak that stood beside the Lyndon House Art Gallery for many years. Not sure how old it was before it was cut down. But they decided to have a wood art show made from the wood taken from the tree. And many agonizing days and hours later, I finally finished this project. The 20” diameter x 24” long piece of limb received had been lying on the ground for several years, and the outer 3-4 inches was fluffy with rot. I wound up with a 10-12” x 24 solid piece that I promptly split and painted so the end grain wouldn't lose moisture so quickly and split. 2 years later it had done so anyway. A soak in alcohol only hastened the process. And it went downhill from there. It's been quite the journey and I nearly gave up and quit multiple times. It was an exercise in perseverence.
I will only note that the astute among you will certainly recognize the mistakes. I'll not point them out.

Chippendale Chair

Furnished content.
(from Popularwoodworking.com)

Creative thinking and dirt-simple jigs make the joinery a straightforward task. Back to the April 2018 article index Full-Size Plan:Download I tend to think of Chippendale chairs as highly ornate. But there are startlingly simple examples of the style …Source
