Hand-Harvested Sea Salt Serving Box
Furnished content. (from Lumberjocks.com)
In our travels we've acquired various hand-harvested sea salts whose various containers have added to the clutter on the table. As a skill-building project I decided to make this 12x3x3 box with some curly maple I've been saving. I resawed the 4/4 maple to make the top and bottom and used Brazilian Cherry for the sides. The mitered corners are splined with the curly maple. The piston fit individual compartments are made with 1/4 hard maple. That way I can swap out salts without having to dump the whole box. The half moon handle is mortised to the elevated piece of the cherry which is their to provide contrast and visual separation from the curly top. It's attached to the top with brass screws. I'll put silica gel packets in each compartment to keep the salt from hydrating. Finish is Tung Oil. Individual compartments have no finish.
