Canisters & Recipe BoxMy wife wanted simple kitchen canisters and a matching recipe box. Made these over 25 years ago, they've been repainted a couple times. She's an “all homemade” cook, so they've gotten a lot of use.Canisters
1/2” MDF, just glued together, no fasteners
The bottom and top plates are rabbeted to engage in all four sides
I cut each side as one piece for the container and lid, then cut the lid segment off each side piece so the lids match exactly for a tight seal when closed. You can feel the air pressure when putting the lid on, nearly airtight.
If you notice in the third picture, there's a red dot on the lid and the container. Turns out my assemblies are not perfectly square, so the dot indicates the alignment that fits perfect. :) Also that nasty looking red inside the lid, overspray from a time when we painted them red (90's kitchen theme)Recipe Box
1/8' hardboard, with tiny 1/16” rabbets for all corner joints
Assembled only with glue, I never expected it to last this long with those tiny 1/8” glue joints
Bottom and top rabbeted into each side.
Made it as one close box, then cut the top off.
recessed the hinges, which was fun in wood only 1/8” thick
Inside is kinda ugly with that raw rough masonite, but it works and my lady hasn't complained.
