Thirty years ago my brother in law while at the university of Calgary had joined a geological survey for the university and had spent the whole summer exploring the Rocky Mountains near Clearwater b.c. He found this lava sheet and gave it to me as a keepsake. It's been on display at our house all those years. I finally got to design a base for it as it has been quite hard on my shelves.
I had a nice chunk of claro walnut in my wood stash that became the base for this beautiful lava sheet. The base was carved and unintentionally it looked like the sole of a shoe. However, I didn't want to call the carving a boot as the wood carving was a boat for the lava sheet.
