Big Spoon.

Carved this for daughter-in-laws birthday. From a tree I was pruning – Myrtle I think. Should have included something for size comparison as its a bit of a monster – 45cm long (nearly 18ins). Lovely wood to carve but took a long time to dry even after most of stock removed. Axe, rasp and gouge. Sanded to 400 then salad bowl oil. She seemed to like it.

DIY turning tools
Furnished content. (from Lumberjocks.com)
I have my grandfather's lathe from around 1962. I have a bunch of tools but no slow speed grinder. I tried to sharpen the tools with diamond stones and they work OK. Then I saw the carbide tools but didn't want to spend $120 a piece for new tools. I bought the carbide inserts for $15 a piece. I had stainless rods lying around and used some thicker maple I had from a primitive cutting board. I wasn't sure how I was going to drill deep 1/2 holes acutely so I routed the wood before hand and then exposed the hole after turning. I really wish I had a live tailstock. I did the black lines by making a small groove and then pushing a wire in until it smoked as I saw someone else do. The ferrules are a connection piece from the plumbing section. The biggest pain was drilling and tapping the holes for the inserts. Two broken drill bits and two broken taps later I got the second one finished. They work pretty well.

Floating Corner Shelf
Furnished content. (from Lumberjocks.com)
Finally finish up with a corner shelf for the bedroom TV, I was asked a little over 3 years ago to build one. Told her I needed to have a shop first, but she is happy now.3/4” plywood for top and sides, 1/4 for bottom and built up trim to closely match the furniture trim. Measures 27” against the wall and 39” across the corners, 4 1/2” height. Had to paint it to match the furniture also. I will use a french cleat to mount. Thanks for viewing
