curio cabinet makeover

Hey Lumberjocks
Just wanted to post my latest project, a curio shelves turned enclosed cabinetry. The client wanted to make better use of the space by adding doors and enclosing the end of the original builders cabinets. I chose Birch for the cabinets as I wanted the wood to have the same feel as the original cabinets. Simply put- I added two face-frames at a 90 degree angle. I attached the two face-frames to the existing cabinetry. Once secured, I manufactured two doors and attached them with soft-close hinges. For the doors I used a very close replica of the original doors. Once that job was complete I added two false doors to align with the existing cabinet doors on the perpendicular side. I decided to not use the same width door frames for these as I thought the frame dimension would not fit well in that space. I dialed down the width to a size I thought would work. The entire set of kitchen cabinets will be painted in the near future.

Tortoise Bowl

This bowl is a big departure from the other bowls and forms I've been turning lately.
This piece is much more experimental in the form and technique and even the finish. Some of these experiments were very successful and I will continue playing with the untraditional forms and other techniques. This bowl is made from ash.One of the experiments that was not as successful was using encaustic wax for the finish.In the end it did work.
Encaustic wax is beeswax with damar resin (pine resin) and oil colors. I made a LOT of different color bars of it a few years ago. The resin gives it a very high melting point so is applied when hot. It also makes it a hard coat once it sets up. Encaustic wax is a preservative and some of the oldest paintings and art objects were painted with it. It also buffs out to a very nice shine.The finish is a base coat of white wax but I was not able to layer it with other colors the way I wanted. Initially it was only going to be the interior that had encaustic wax and I wanted to do a gradation of color from light pink to dark purple. The end result was removing the excess wax and buffing it out. I also decided to color and finish the entire bowl with this white wax. That was followed with Renaissance Wax and buffed. The result is not bad but very different from what I intended. It has a very subtle white stain and a medium gloss shine. It reminds me of a Danish Soap Finish.There was a lot of experimenting with this piece once the bowl came off the lathe.
It was fun.

Toys and Joys UTV

Here are a pair of Gators using yet another Toys and Joys plan. I started these way too late this spring. The weather turned to summer in Minnesota early this year. I will still do shop projects in the summer, but I like to have the models wrapped up in March. These were completed in mid May and I had outdoor projects to do at home that I should be taking care of.
These are once again made of northern white hard maple and walnut. I think these two species compliment each other nicely, plus they are readily available for me. Of all the models I have done, I do believe these are my favorite. I gifted one to a brother law and will hang on to the second one until I find a new home for it.
I have one model left to share on this site then I will get to work on projects around my house.
