Thank you all for your comments on my last post – see it here. It's always a pleasure to share my work here on Lumberjocks and to get the feedback from like minded enthusiasts.A little more on the construction to answer James questions. The outer Tomobako uses finger joints, or comb joints or what ever you want to call them. They are reinforced with typical Japanese wooden nails – well actually tooth-picks with the sharp end snapped off – they go nicely into a 2mm hole. The long corners of the two chests use a drawer-lock joint done on a router. They were glued together as one long box and then saw in half afterwards. I used band cramps and some long formers to apply the main pressure. The sash clamps are to true it up for squarenessThe drawers and small internal boxes use mitre joints with splines for extra strength. On the drawers they are secret splines similar to the ones below on another current job.They are somewhat easier than secret mitred dovetails!On the drawers they are the more usual through splines. The boxes were then veneered and edge banded afterwards which hides the splines. I usually use plywood splines often with contrasting veneers if they are going to be seen – these aren't.I've found this little notched piece of wood below is excellent for making sure the splines fit tight. Tapping it with a hammer, is better than tapping the splines directly with a hammer which often breaks them off!!The Furoshiki is a brocade fabric lined with silk, purchased from our local homes wares store (Spotlight). My ever patient wife said is was quite hard to sew due to the gold and silver threads in it. Though as ever she did an excellent job.I'm particularly liking the use of stud-earrings as knobs at the moment. Router Plane Box

I, like many here already, got tired of having my Veritas router plane rattling around in a cardboard box, so I made this from some old pine boards that were slacking off in my cut off bin. The twist is that all parts external and internal (except hinges and latch) were made on a CNC. I had to do a bit of chisel work to square the radius inside the finger joints. That only took a few minutes. Finish was a couple of coats of spray-on clear poly varnish.Why a gecko? I like geckos, that's all.

Log skidder

This log skidder was my first attempt at a Toys and Joys model. The Timberjack skidder with a 3 cylinder Detroit diesel holds a special place in my heart. Years ago a building I had my shop in was in the lot of a logging company. The lot in front of my building was the staging area for all the equipment from the Prentice loader trucks to the wheeled cable skidders along with the tracked skidders. This skidder and all my models are constructed of hardwood from this same company. I worked as shop manager for this company in their hardwood lumber store. It was the best job, working for the greatest people. This skidder is made of carmelized hard maple and walnut. I remember being intimidated by the wheels, but one I started making them I realized, although time consuming, they are fairly easy.
This will be the last model post until next year. Thanks for looking and commenting!
