Harmonic Oscillator Clock

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I finished building Clayton Boyer's Harmonic Oscillator clock today. My friend built the Sapele base, and I made the clock works, oscillator and weights.Lots of woods in this project. The dial ring is paduak with ebony number inlays, the clook wheels are maple and paduak from shop made plywood, and the clock frame is mahogany. The CNC makes fabricating the wheels and associated parts a lot easier, but there is still a lot of handwork and metal work involved so it feels very much like most other woodworking related projects, with the same satisfaction when it's finally done and turned out like you had hoped. An added bonus with a clock is that you get to watch it run, not just sit there looking pretty.

Dealing with a cupped top?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

1-3/4" thick. White oak. 60" diameter round top.

Just realized that it's cupped about 1/4" across its span.

It never sat on a surface that sealed one side from air/humidity movement and it was flat when it came out of the clamps about three weeks ago.

I've tried soaking the concave side with waterin hopes of flattening it, but only lost about 1/8" of the cup.

My options, as I see it now, are to attack the outer high points on one side and the high center onthe other with a handplane or a belt sander.

Or to take it to a local shop that has a CNC to flatten it.

What would you do? Ripping and regluing isn't an option.

Wixey WR 700 Table Saw Digital Readout

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Hi,

I'm looking to put a WR 700 on my Grizzly G0771Z table saw and I don't see any Grizzly units listed on the will it fit. I had this on my Delta Uni and loved it. When I retired and downsized my home I sold that machine. Anyone have this installed on this table saw? If so, how well is it working.

Thanks,

Mike

What moisture content can you bring wood inside at?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I milled about 2000 board feet of red oak last year. Mostly quartersawn 5/4, some slabs. This was in early November, so close to 10 months ago.

The 5/4 stacks are roughly between 8% and 15%. The 8/4 slabs are still pretty wet (25-30% in the middle). I was advised to air dry as much as possible because of the tannic acid content of the wood.

If it still needs to be stickered at that MC, I will leave it. My understanding was that it won't get to interior equilibrium MC outside ever and will stay right around the 10% mark, more or less. If I can stack it like normal dry wood at this point, I would love to. But as this is my first time drying this much wood, I thought I would ask.

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I haven't been on here for a long so I thought I would catch up a bit. I have been really busy. I an not sure if I showed this one or not. It was done a few years back but it is picture heavy so I will just give you a link.

I have also become the kinda proud owner of 15 jukeboxes.. Most of the cabinets are made of particle board and are in not so good shape. Here are are a couple of links.

I have plenty of winter projects. I was at Clark AFB from June 69-Oct 70 except for a 3 month tdy to a radar site on the DMZ in South Korea. Plans are to return next spring before the rainy season starts. If I don't make it I will go next fall after the rainy season is over. Plan to go to Paete whiche is known as the wood carving capital of the Philippines.

Need alignment pins for table leaves - vintage 1950 - 60s.

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

A friend of a friend has a table, just realized though she has one leaf, she is missing 2 more. I have agreed to make new leaves . The table looks vintage 50's to 60's when the alignment pins were thin brass - see the photo. I have done some searching ( Rockler and Lee Valley ) and can only find the more contemporary pins, which are more of a bullet shape, and much thicker. I can always turn new ones out of brass to fit existing, but didn't know if anyone has a source for the old style.

Johnson Paste Wax

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

You probably know that Johnson Paste Wax is now a memory. So appreciate that half-used tin in your shop.
A suitablereplacement is Minwax Paste Finishing Wax. I used it today as the only finish on a chest made of120-year-old pine (from an old barn). The Minwax was absorbed, leaving a dull, not shinyfinish. It did not change to color of the light wood. And of course the Minwaxwill now be used on all my tools, just like the old stuff.

Teak Chair Plans

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Hi,

I was looking at buying some teak chairs for my lanai as I have a teak table that I purchases 4 years ago. After seeing the price of $549 each I thought I might try to see if I can build them. All my searches show where to buy. I even checked Norm's site as I knew he built some chairs. Has anyone built anything like this? They look simple enough but I'm I always like plans with a material list. The next issue will be to find a supplier.

WoodSmith magazine, issue 39

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I can't seem to find issue 49 of WoodSmith magazine from June 1985

this issue describes a " Old Fashioned Porch Swing-Glider"

I made a number of these for siblings and in-laws in the late 80s

My oldest son, in his new house, remembers the porch swing fondly and wants one for himself

So I any one would be so kind to PM me if you have a copy, I would appreciate a photo copy of the plan.

Thank you very much

Tom

Ever make a cribbage board?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

SWMBO and the kids are leaning on me to make a cribbage board. (I used to play it so a refresher might be in mind). Anyways, I see Rockler sells a template for making one (as well as the pegs). I'll grant that they're jig will make straight, clean holes, but I'm cheap so I'm looking for other ideas. I can copy a template and spray glue it to a board, but I'm afraid the holes won't be clean and straight.

Is this a case of "spend the $$$ now DP so you won't regret it later?

How have you made your cribbage board(s)?

I am looking for a free wood identifying app for my phone. I have been around wood and trees a fair amount but I have never been very good at identifying species. If anyone has a suggestion, that would be great. Thx as always.

If you were to build a new shop...

Furnished content.

If you were going to build a new shop from scratch, what would you do or not do?

I mean everything, like type of construction, building shape and size, building features, machines to definitely have or avoid... anything.
