Really CHEAP mini chainsaw

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Is this also wood working? I just bought a very cheap mini chainsaw (6" bar) on Amazon for $55 (with 2 batteries). I am presently using it for cleaning up some branches but I could see using it for rough cutting beams etc. Anybody else have any experience with these things?

Shop organization projects done

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Or at least a couple of them!
Making progress on getting my new shop set up and running. LONG process and sometimes overwhelming after the move.
I don't really think this is woodworking, more like computer programming and assembly with screws!

Clamp rack. Every clamp I have is on here except the 6 or so clamps that a 6-8'.

Lathe chisel caddy. I put it on wheels and also a turntable to make it easy to move and access everything.

New cabriole challenge (updated)

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

(New comment below)

I have a request for cabriole legs that are very curved. This will be for an executive desk, 30x60. Material is hard maple.

I understand the basics of cabriole legs but have yet to make one. I'm excited about the challenge of learning something new.

To make legs with exaggerated curves, what advice would you offer? Of course I need to find drawings to create templates and I'll need to glue up stock to make blanks big enough.

Picture is along the lines of what is desired.

Prefinished plywood as backsplash

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I used 1/2" prefinished plywood for the backs of the cabinets in this project. Those were 36", and two of the larger cabinets were 72" and 76" wide. This meant that I had odd-sized full-length (8') pieces that were about 12" wide. Not really being sure what I would do with those, as they're too small for shelves(though I'm sure I would have found a use eventually), I thought I could use them for the "backsplash" in the 5" space between the countertop and the bar top (presently being worked). I did not want to deal with tile in that space, as that would not match the "actual" backsplash (and I'm not rip cutting that much tile). So I measured and cut them down with the tracksaw, attached them using pocket holes drilled in the stud wall for the bar top, masked the countertop, and put down a bead of silicone.

It seems to be very easy for a backsplash, and given its solvent resistance and UV finish it would probably be very easy to clean and use as an actual kitchen backsplash. I imagine that's far too chintzy for most people, but I could certainly see its utility.

Backgammon board is done!!

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I finished it this weekend.

Some of the miters aren't perfectly tight (although there are splines there that you can't see for reinforcements) and the flocking came out not as thick as I had hoped (you can see what looks like worn spots in the trays). Those are 3 magnets used to keep it closed. Had 2 originally, but added the 3rd for insurance.

Also in the picture the chips don't look all that contrasting but they are. Funny, but when I first turned the cylinder for the chips and chopped them "meat cutter" style, they turned out too think for the trays and the case wouldn't close. I then turned another set of blanks but when I finished those, they were too close in color! 3rd times a charm! (and I didn't even venture to the plumbing aisle, but I think the plumbing gods had a say in it!). So now I have 30+ left over chips of each color. Thought about creating a checkerboard insert, but the dividing halve would make it a little awkward to play checkers, no?

(do I have the game set up correctly in the last shot?)

Anyways, on to the next project!!

Latest Project : Floating TV Cabinet

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

This project grew legs quickly. It started as "let's get that center channel speaker off the floor and onto a stand". Then, "How about an under TV cabinet?" followed by "How about a floating TV cabinet?"Next, "Wouldn't some built inLED lighting be a nice touch?". Finally,"Whoa, you can do that with LED lights now"?

This is the "Before" shot from around Christmas. The middle speaker sat happily in that spot for over 7 years (and had to sometimes put up with the indignation ofgetting nudged by a Roomba)

.jpg  20221231_131004.jpg (Size: 302.08 KB / Downloads: 111)

The "After" shot. I picked up some beautiful cherry from a St. Pete lumber yard. Luckily, some of it was just about 12" wide when prepped.

.jpg  IMG_2363.jpg (Size: 278.33 KB / Downloads: 112)

I did box joints on the top corners and dados everywhere else.

.jpg  IMG_2362.jpg (Size: 237.44 KB / Downloads: 112)

I installed two power/USB portals. I recessed the one on the cabinettop and flush-mounted the one in the lower middle cubby. I also made a speaker grill that is held in place by neodymium magnets. I had just enough grill cloth left over from redoing the grills on my two (almost 40 years old)Mach One speakers. I attempted to match the form factor of those.

.jpg  IMG_2356.jpg (Size: 178.79 KB / Downloads: 111)

Here is a YouTube video that I made to demo the dynamics of these lights that could not be conveyed in photos.

There is an immersive "DreamView" mode that reacts to the image on the TV screen. There is also a "Music" mode that reacts to the sound in the room

what is your preferred plywood gripper/carrier?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I have a shop-made carrier that holds sheet goods from the bottom and that works okay, but I'm considering getting one that grips the plywood from the top. It just seems more ergonomic to me and doesn't require having to lift the sheet onto the carrier.

There are a lot of sellers and price ranges out there ... from $25 to $50+ for a single gripper/carrier and then there's prices of like $40-50 for two for the lower priced ones.
Have you used more than one brand of a gripper/carrier? What do you prefer and why?

Here's one on AMAZON for an example.

thanks

3 customer service experience

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Early part of this week was interesting, dealt with customer service from 3 different companies

Build.com by Ferguson, I order some drawer slides from them, UPS delivered the package, but no slide inside, the box was damaged. Called the customer service. Call was picked up within a minute, the person listen to my issue and immediately placed replacement order with next day air shipment. I did received the replacement next day. I am sure the freight cost was not cheap as it was a 15 Lb. package, but the company made priority to take care of the issue.

e-bay- I order some fasteners, which never received, the supplier did shipped, send tracking number but USPS lost the package. Contacted e-bay and I was provided refund within a day.

Rockler- I did order a feather board online as this item was not available in store. For $ 6.00 item paid $ 8.00 in shipping. It took them 4 days to create a label for USPS, but USPS did not show that they received the package, I waited 5 days hoping that it will just show at my door. I called the customer service, waited for about 15 minutes before someone picked the phone. I explained the issue, I was told that I have to wait 10 days from shipping date to file a complained, after that if the item was not delivered that they will issue refund. Of course they did not offer any options, replacement order, or expedited shipping. The person thank me for calling and hang up.

I was surprise with response from Rockler. I always had good experience with local store. Future I will stay away from online sale at Rockler.

Do I need more light?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

This isn't exactly a woodworking question, but it does involve a lot of wood, and there was a thread on here not long ago about concealing wiring for lighting....and in fact I am using them here on this for over-cabinet lighting. It would not be very hard to use double-sided tape to mount a few strips under the middle shelf to light the bottom shelf and then run the wiring with just a tiny hole in the cabinet carcass. From there it's behind a door, and only another hole away to an unfinished storage area. I guess what I am wondering is if it's really necessary.

This was rigged up with a lamp cord, but in the install location I have a hardwired LED dimmer available. This might make the contrast between the top and bottom shelves a lot less stark.

I guess I hate the feeling of thinking I should be doing more before I've even had a chance to install the thing.

Universal Shooting Board - 2023 Update

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Someone on another forum asked to buy one of my Universal Shooting Boards. The current price for the PlumaPly I had been using made Baltic birch look like an attractive alternative. I had stayed away from BB because I didn't like the friction characteristics of it, and MDF as not having long term durability or moisture resistance. So I settled on BB plus Formica glued to the top of the plane ramps and front and back ends, as well, to reinforce the pin and knob holes. Turns out I like both how well the plane rides on the Formica and also the looks. I had been thinking for some time about improving the pivot stop system, too, so I added a new UHMW bushing for the pivot bearing to ride in, which makes it super smooth. The request also including the provision to add inserts so a LV shooting plane ramp could be added in the future, if desired. I took that opportunity to develop my own, alternative, plane fence guide.

Cucumber magnolia tree wood

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

So I think what I have is a Cucumber Magnolia tree (magnolia acuminata). It was rotting at the base and leaning towards our pond so I had it felled so it wouldn't fall into the pond (still came close though) and maybe I can harvest the wood from it.

From what I've read it's generally used for furniture frames, trim. and carving (kinda like linden wood according to one source). I do like wood carving but some 450bf is a lot of carving.
I also have a wood burning stove, although from what I've read it doesn't burn as hot as hard-hardwoods.

Has anyone here used this wood? What is your experience with it?
Thanks

Design question: Straight leg to imitate rattan?

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I have a design challenge: Take 3" square table leg and give it the shape of four bamboo sticks bundled together. It only needs to mimick the shape, not pass for bamboo.

I know I can use a round over bit on the four corners to make them round but how would you go about dividing them down the center?

They do *not* need to be individual cylinders, but need a deep valley down the center of each face. And it needs to have curved walls.

Your thoughts?

Filter for a Pentz Air Cleaner

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

I want to make a Pentz Air Cleaner so I can keep the air clean while I use non-electric tools. If you are unfamiliar, this is an 8" centrifugal fan on top of a large canister filter. My plan is to use these supplies:

Filter: Clark NF20011 nanofiber, MERV 15, 260 sqft of filter
Pre-Filter: 30 PPI Speaker Foam that I wrap around the filter
Fan: FanTech FG8

My shop is small, so this will be permanently mounted on a shelf near the floor.

This is not exactly what Pentz recommended, but the fan he recommended seems to be low quality and the Wynn filters are $120 more with a longer lead time.

Does anybody have any feedback or suggestions on this plan?

Mark

Need ideas (or as is said here "idears") for my paint shelf

Furnished content.
(from WoodNet.net)

Hi,

In looking for my flocking set (see my thread about thebackgammon board I'm building) I basically took most of the stuff off of my paint shelves. This shelf holds:

1) gallon cans (mostly interior/exterior paint for our house)

2) Scrapers/wire brushes/pain trays. The prep stuff

3) My assortment of stains for the WW projects I do.

4) Other junk

I've decided to organize it, not sure how yet, but it'll come to me.

Here's my question: Things were pretty dusty on the shelves and I'd like to enclose them, somewhat. I thought about just attaching cardboard to the sides and fashioning some sort of doors for each shelf out of wood. But the cardboard would look too "rednecky"
Smile

I suppose I could go get a 1/4" of plywood and cover it and then make the doors, but I'm looking for suggestions. What have you done? Thanks!

(and no, I haven't YTed or Googled yet...)

works better when you attach the picture, right??
Smile
