Furnished content.
As editors, we search our two web sites (popularwoodworking.com and shopwoodworking.com) constantly for information for the online extras portion of all articles and most columns, the information, we hope, is both relevant and interesting. While searching the sites, I often come across books, articles and DVDs that have scads of interesting information, including tips

An Even Better Bench Light
Furnished content.
This summer I swallowed hard and praised an inexpensive IKEA light that I used while teaching at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking. When I returned home, I was going to buy one. But then I found that one of my kids had purchased one and had it in her room. So I pinched it.

If you read my personal blog, you know Im in the midst of deciding what to do with my kitchen (so I can sell my house). I have a kitchen file (read: a boot box overflowing with unorganized pages ripped from magazines, print outs from web sites and sample materials) that I began putting together

A Hidden Gem: Building Classic Arts & Crafts Furniture
Furnished content.
If you are a student of Arts & Crafts furniture, don't be put off by the too-generically titled "Building Classic Arts & Crafts Furniture" by Michael Crow. This book should be more properly titled "The Genius of Limbert Furniture Designs." This book is narrowly focused on 33 designs produced by Charles Limbert's furniture factory in

If you are thinking about building the Dutch Tool Chest from the October 2013 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine, you aren't alone. I've heard from dozens of other woodworkers who see it as a simple, fast and efficient way to store your hand tools (and make them portable). I've been using my Dutch chest for

Different Kinds of Roorkhee Chairs
Furnished content.
Since building my first run of Roorkhee chairs for the October 2012 issue of Popular Woodworking, I've been able to explore many of the variants of this nifty design, from the original version (shown in the magazine), to its iteration in the hands of Kaare Klint. This week I'm building an early chair inspired by

Looking for Some Good Reading?
Furnished content.
Ive been working on my editors note for the February issue of the magazine, and was inspired to write about online woodworking in large part due to the Online Woodworking Roundtable session at Woodworking in America 2013. I was (quite pleasantly) surprised to see how many people came to listen to our panelists talk about

Furniture in Wartime
Furnished content.
When the British Empire expanded to almost every corner of the globe in the 19th century, the furniture of the mobile class evolved into simplified versions of high-style Georgian wares, according to scholars of the period. Fancy chests of drawers lost their carvings and mouldings so they would be more robust. Large pieces of furniture

Installing Hardware with a Center Punch
Furnished content.
Thanks to a book I'm writing on campaign furniture, I've installed more brass hardware in the last two years than in my first 18 years of woodworking. As a result, I have become quite particular about how I install screws for hinges, pulls, corner protectors, hasps, locksets and so on. I've revisited a lot of

Furnished content.
Since leaving Popular Woodworking in June 2011, I have avoided writing tool reviews. In fact, I have been thrilled to focus my attention on other things. But I am coming out of retirement momentarily to discuss a tool that I have been waiting years, yes, years, for: the Blue Spruce Toolworks Joiner's Mallet.

Woodworking: Learn Something New Every Day
Furnished content.
One the greatest aspects of woodworking is that there are always new things to learn. When I began building furniture, I set my sights on a few complex projects which I figured I could build when I had gained experience. The closer I got to building those pieces, the more I knew how much I

A Clever (re)Discovery
Furnished content.
Im editing an article from Jeff Miller for the February issue, and, without giving too much away, it's a simple setup for cutting perfect tenons on curved and angled workpieces (and it also works gangbusters on straight shoulders). Jeff came up with this idea, then discovered a similar solution in Andr Roubos Lart du menuisier.

The newest book from Popular Woodworking Books, ''Handsaw Essentials'' has my name on the cover. But that's really a marketing move that you should ignore.
