Period Hardware, Too
Furnished content.
Significant changes in furniture came about as we moved from William & Mary (W&M) designs to those of the Queen Anne period. Generally we talk about cabriole legs and dovetail joinery being the big changes. Dovetails moved from clunky, chunky and evenly sized tails and pins to a more refined design as we clawed our

Eastern Advice for Western Woodworking
Furnished content.
The only thing I dislike about teaching at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking is that I'd rather be listening than talking, especially if Doug Dale is my assistant. Doug, a 10-year employee at the school, is a low-key, casual and humble guy. But every time I shut my yap and open my ears,

Not Just Another Woodworking in America Hand Tool Olympics Post

Woodworking in America 2013 (WIA) has come and gone, but we have so many fond memories. For me some of the best memories each year come from the Hand Tool Olympics. If you have not been to WIA in the past and have no idea what the Hand Tool Olympics are, you are really missing

Getting Too Close to the Studley Tool Chest
Furnished content.
Photographer Narayan Nayar shot me a look of disdain, perhaps the first time I've ever been on the receiving end of that particular facial contortion. "I just can't believe you guys are being such babies", he said. Narayan was right. Don Williams and I were balking at what seemed a simple request: Move H.O.

Building the Limbert No. 346 Magazine Stand
Furnished content.
Note: If you missed my first post on this magazine stand, you might like to begin here. I may be overly fond of pattern routing, because any time I have more than one identical part, I immediately begin contemplating a new pattern. And that's the approach I took when building this magazine stand: My first

The Price of Pushing the Limits
Furnished content.
My work is often engaging both mentally and physically. Because of this, I find it difficult to detach myself from the project at the end of the day. I just stare into space, unable to really focus on or enjoy anything. I make for terrible company. If I want to continue doing this type of

WIA on the Interwebs (So Far)
Furnished content.
The inimitable Peter Follansbee delivered the keynote address at the Friday evening dinner. I suspect that many of you who were at Woodworking in America 2013 are, like me, still wading through e-mail, trying to catch up on sleep and perhaps trying to find your voices (mine is apparently still down at the convention center).

A Close Look at H.O. Studley's Vises
Furnished content.
Once you are able to rip your eyes off of H.O. Studley's magnificent tool chest, you can spend almost as much time looking at the benchtop and vises of the Massachusetts piano maker. On Monday, Don Williams, the author of a forthcoming book on Studley, and Jameel Abraham of Benchcrafted spent the morning taking a

Winding Laths, Improve How You Flatten a Board
Furnished content.
A good pair of winding laths or winding sticks is sometimes hard to find, I suspect not many have survived the burn pile. The good news is that a new set is easily made in a few minutes at the bench. Why would I want a pair of Winding Sticks? What do they do?

On my way home from a visit with the Triangle Woodworkers Association in Raleigh, N.C., I decided to drop in on the J. Gibson McIlvain Company of White Marsh, Md., (the chance to stop at a lumberyard that can trace its roots back to 1740 was far too tempting). If you think a company with

Six-board Chest: Day 2
Furnished content.
We decided to skip adding a till to the chests so that we could spend most of Monday working on the mouldings, the decorative scratched patterns and the painted finish. As a result, the chest carcases went together with alarming speed. One minute it was like we were in a shop full of boards.

In my Make a Panel-raising Plane article in the November 2013 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine, the iron I use came from my reserve of New, Old Stock (NOS) irons. Another Way to Fold a Table

During the last two years my woodworking has been consumed with furniture in the campaign style from Great Britain. One of the many cool aspects of this style of furniture is that many of the pieces fold up for transport. Last week I finished building a teak folding officer's field desk from about 1830.
