Anything wrong with making the cut

Say I have an 8wide and 7ft long board that I want to rip in 1 widths. I usually just set my fence 1 from the blade and make the cut. The other way would be to move the fence over 1 for every cut. I don'thave a splitter on my zip code saw. Am I doing this wrong.
