BB, Curly Maple & Ebony Box

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

BB, Curly Maple & Ebony BoxI was gifted by a fellow LJ'r some curly maple that was glued to BB plywood. It needed some tlc and thoughtful handling so I asked my wife to come out to the shop and tell me what to do. We all know what that accomplished so I went ahead and started chopping, cutting and fitting. This was a total seat of the pants build because it took me 2 weeks to get the final finish coat of wipe on poly. In between the start and final I changed my mind too many times to count. I actually had a wild cherry piece cut and fitted for the top til I was told that didn't look right. So I fit another piece of curly to match the bottom and didn't like that so I trimmed the opening with ebony then refit the top for that cavity. Of course I had to miter the pieces just to make it it a little more difficult. Cutting a miter on a 1/8' thick x 3/16” high stick of ebony can be a challenge on the table saw but thanks to incra I “gotter done”
So that brought the corners of ebony to the top and I then had to tie in the bottom. I did that with 3/16” x 1/2” wide mitered pieces on the bottom I didn't do it yet but I will most likely put some felt pads on the bottom to elevate the ebony just off the sitting surface.
Almost forgot – the top is a lift off with a rabbit cut in the carcus prior to glue up, the last picture shows the fit.
All in all it was a fun project and I've got enough for 4 or 5 more boxes but I've got some bowls to make first.
This was btw my first trip using Ebony, quite a learning experience. Thanks for looking and have a GREAT day !
