Light Weight Crosscut Sled

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Light Weight Crosscut SledI finally got tired of having to use my large heavy sled for all my crosscut requirements so I finally built myself a sled, that will still handle almost all my crosscut needs, and is both light weight and smaller as well. The sled's base is made from 1/2 birch plywood measuring 24 L x 14 W with one of the corners trimmed off and nine 2 diameter holes to reduce the overall weight of the base. For the fence I used a piece of 1.5 x 1.5 aluminum angle to match the length of the base with a cut-out to clear the saw blade. To attach the fence to the base I used a couple of studded knobs which fit into T-nuts that rest in counterbores cut into the bottom of the base. To fancy things up a little I used black walnut to make both the front fence and the table saw blade guard. I added a small adjustable locking stop block which allows me to make multiple cuts of identical length with ease. For a finish I applied three coats of gloss polyurethane sanding between each of the coats.

New Desk

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

New DeskI needed a new desk, because I needed some drawers and a larger work space. I bought one from Amazon that you put together from “laser cut parts”, but that was lost. It's ok, those are garbage anyway. So I took Amazon's payout and refund, and built my own for about the same cost, complete with columns and corbels! The desk is 80% oak, with the rest being plywood and hardware. I will eventually get it fitted for a glass top. The color is a combination of two different stains that I liked, and made this weird color that I'll never be able to duplicate. I eventually took the middle drawer out for leg space. Tall people problems.Overall, not a bad project, for a couple of weekends. Also I hate sanding tops.

Cabinet in White Oak

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Cabinet in White OakA floor standing cabinet in white oak. The customer I built this for wanted beadbaord panels in the doors and all I could find was red oak, so i used an “esspresso” stain under the red mohagany stain I used on the rest of the cabinet. This took out the pink shade of the red oak. It turned out darker, but I dont mind that. Looking back, I wish I had used something with less obvious grain in the beadboard, its too “busy”. I used mortise and tenon joinery, with dowels more for looks and detail than extra support. One problem I was unable to resolve is with the quarter sawn white oak ply on the sides and back. The strips of veneer stained different tones as you can see in the last photo. I tried using a toner mixed with amber shellac, but my inexperience shows. So my question is, is the typical of stained plywood, or just a poor quality plywood? If you've had a similar experience or answer, please let me know! It was a.real disappointment for an otherwise satisfying project.
