Low Boy Urn

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Low Boy UrnThis is number 3 in my recent Urn builds.
I'm enjoying this series because it really challenges me to stretch my technical skills and try many different ways to remounting pieces and sizing them to fit together. With wood that wants to move this is difficult. I find myself having to re-turn certain parts that have warped while drying so these pieces take a lot more time the the quick and simple once turned pieces. This piece moved and warped quite a bit. It was turned into face grain rather than end grain and the wood has a tendency to shrink and warp much more when stablizing in this orientation. This urn has a body of pecan with a sapele collar that has the female threads for the lid. The lid and collar have 16 t.p.i. (teeth per inch) that are hand cut with Crown threading tools. The male threaded post is made of oak. It is fitted into a lid made of ash topped with a spalted ash finial. The sapele and the oak threads are reinforced with C.A. glue then recut and waxed. This seems to help the threads from crumbling or failing. The Low Boy Urn is 5 1/2” at the widest part and 5” tall without the lid. With the lid and finial it is 8” tall. The sapele and the ash of the lid have a high sheen and show a lot of chatoyance. This is enhanced by the finishing process.I sanded this urn to 400 grit then used the Beall polishing process with tripoli and white diamond. I then used a Maloof homemade wipe on finish followed by carnauba wax. Thanks for looking and C & C welcome.
