2021 Plane Swap, Jack Plane

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

2021 Plane Swap, Jack PlaneThis is my entry for the 2021 Plane Swap. A Jack Plane with the bed set at 43 deg. However it is a few inches longer than the traditional size.I used a solid piece of Piquarana for the body, (2-1/2” square by 18”) then used the drops to form the wedge and tote. The bed and chip well was hogged out using a fostner bit, then using the chisel's to finish it up. The tote was set in a mortis, with a tenon and a 3/8 oak dowel. I tried to make the tote a little larger for the folks which may have larger paws. The front knob, (which looks more like a ball hitch) was turned from Bloodwood, with a round tenon. The blade set is a Hock Set 1-7/8” in the width. With the shipping delays, from other suppliers it did creat a bit of a challenge on my choice of a build. The design came from Traditional Wooden Handplanes, by Scott Wynn. Going into this swap I did not know much about Handplanes, just how to use one. Let alone build one. Thanks to Dave P who gave me a few suggestions about having a few different plans, never made it “B”The bonus item. A small hammer using Mexican Royal Ebony / Katalux and Bloodwood. I used some simple brass plumbing fittings to tie everything together. (Hammer Size, I think) tip to tip is 6” and an 8” handle. Forgot to measure that before shipping. (I need to make another one or two for myself) it has a nice little weight which can be used with chisel's too). All pieces were finished with Watco – Danish Oil, Natural Finish, three coats. The last photo was my proto type which I used as my progress photo. I used oak for that one. This has been an experience, along with being a fun build. And a big thanks goes out to Dave P for his encouraging words and for running the 2021 Plane Swap.
