WOW! It's been a long time since I posted a project! Here's one I just finish. Just a simple box but like many of my projects, it's got a story.A few months ago, my Sons cat passed away. Rough start to a story but he wanted to bring it home to bury it. It was a hour or more drive to get here so I began work on a “kitty coffin” for him. A made a quick simple pine box, ignoring joinery and strength and only carved the cats name in the top. Finished just as he arrived. He said he didn't want to hurt my feelings but he already had one and the cat is in it. Of coarse I said it's okay, it's a box and I'll find a use for it. On the shelf it went.I'm a member of the VFW and our local chapter decided to have a swap and steal Christmas at our December meeting and dinner. You know, pick a present or steal from your buddy. It's fun. But I needed a gift. I saw the former kitty coffin and decided to upgrade and improve it as a gift.First I had to remove the kitty's name off the top. A couple trips through the planer did the trick. I cut the sides back and attached to the lid giving a recessed lid. I had a problem then. 12 screw holes in the lid. An easy fix. I have a bunch of shell casing so I drilled at each screw hole and put in the casing. I then strengthened the sides with screws, countersunk and hidden with dowels. The punisher and spartan are both popular with many of our members so I cut out both from 1/8th plywood and attached to the lid. I finished with jocobean stain, three coats of poly and desert camo for the liner.I now had a nice multipurpose box that can be used as a pistol box, ammo box or just military souvenirs. Whatever the future owner wants to use it for. I'm hoping it goes over well. Thanks for looking.
