I was at my lumber supplier this summer and saw my wife just staring at this board. I took one look at the amount of color variations and birdseye's and I knew I had to make something from it.
I decided to make a sofa table to display our old family photos. Originally I was going to purchase steel legs similar to my last bench project but felt they would be too bulky for this relatively small table (1440). So I went with the “industrial ” look using steel pipe. I played around with different configurations of pipe lengths until it looked right and then got the bright idea to add a flange on the bottom connection. I had this small maple burl sitting around waiting for the right project and I sliced about an 1 1/2 thick piece for a bottom display shelf. Interested in all your comments on how that looks…we're still undecided.
I cleaned and spray painted the steel pipe a hammered dark grey and kept all the connectors original cast color. Finished both wood pieces with shellac and satin urethane.
This was a really fun project that I took months thinking about before all the pieces fell into place. First time using steel piping and first time trying to slice a burl…ended up using a chain saw on it and running it through my very abused planer.Thanks for looking.
