Domino SetI had a lot of fun making this domino set as a wedding gift for a friend! As far as the backstory to this set, my friend and I spend this entire past February with eight other young men working with Christian Aid Ministries rebuilding homes that were destroyed in Ocracoke, NC from hurricane Dorian back in 2019. Over the trip, we played many games of 42 (very much like Rook, but with dominos). Noticing my friend's liking for the game sparked the thought to build him a set- and the rest is history! As far as the specifics for the dominos, the back side of the dominos are old-growth reclaimed redwood; the middle is maple burl, and the top is red gum eucalyptus. The box is solid walnut burl with an olivewood lid. The dominos were oiled with new 5w20 engine oil to add color and a unique twist being that my friend is an auto mechanic. I know this may not be a generally accepted finish, but it really turned out cool! After oiling, each domino was buffed on the drill press with wax both to protect and to prevent a noticeable engine oil feel. All in all, this project took me roughly eight hours to accomplish, being my first domino set. I did make each domino 3/8” thick, so as to avoid them tipping over as easily as the cheap modern 1/4” ones do. The slight cracks in the boxtop were sanded smooth but left unfilled for a rustic look. Each dividing groove on the dominos was cut on a Sawstop, this worked well and I was glad for the safety backup. Each domino hole was drilled by hand via drillpress. Overall, it was an extremely rewarding project!
