Computer Work StationMy grandson graduated college this year, got a job and an apartment, and needed a computer station to allow doing some work at home. Dimensions we agreed on are: 24” deep by 48” wide, and standard 30” high. The first two photos above are directly after delivery & assembly. The stairs and steps into his apartment make moving in large furniture difficult, so this is my first attempt at knock down furniture.Photo 3 shows how I designed the apron structure, the 4 apron segments secured to each other via a corner bracket. This made a sturdy structure that could stand on its own, however the top is fastened to this via traditional wooden clips or “buttons” as they are typically referred to, and made moving the assembly easy. Legs are then attached by 2 hanger bolts each, lag screw threads one end & machine screw threads other end. A simple jig was fabricated to help ensure proper alignment of the hanger bolts mounting holes:I originally used 1/2” by 2 1/2” screws, which came up short as can be seen in photo 3. I then switched to 5/8” by 3” hanger screws shown in photo 4, which worked fine. My mistake was to draw up the build using 3/4” wood, but I left the corner brackets at 15/16” for strength, which changed the bolt length required. Photos 5 and 6 show the grove plowed for the buttons and the top underside – a lot of these used for secure attachment & assembly but still allowing wood movement. The wood I used for the legs was aged cherry somewhere between 12 to 20 years, so it didn't match the top & apron assembly which was new lumbermill sourced. In order to help eliminate this I dyed the new wood with TransTint number 6003 – Reddish Brown, to some success:Now on to the next project. Thanks for viewing.
