Box for Freud Dial a Width Dado SetAnother box for another great tool. Like the Veritas router plane earlier, I couldn't stand to see the Freud Dado set banging around in that flimsy plastic case it came it. I found others here have made wooden boxes but for the most part they replicate the Freud box geometry and use a lot of plywood in the process. I wanted something more compact, since the Freud box is half filled with foam and spacers. I also did not have a lot of plywood in the scrap bin. This box is what I came up with using some old poplar boards found in the cut off bin. I used 5/8” diameter dowels to hold the blades in position. Tooth positions are staggered using the three upper dowels to keep the carbide edges away from the neighboring blades and only touching wood. The circular outer blades are inserted using their collar bosses to space the cutting edges away from the chipper blades underneath. A small ring of 1/4” thick foam holds everything in place when the lid closes. The Freud hex wrench doubles as a carrying handle. The finish is a couple coats of Minwax spray on poly, also a left over from an older project. All the box parts, including the finger joints and carving, were done on a CNC with some minimal chisel cleanup to square the cutting tool radius. Why a frog? Because I used a Gecko earlier, and wanted to be different this time.
