This is a piece I made to show some of the guys here how I make these being that we don't have a hollowing tool. I get asked on LJ's how I do it so I posted some process shots below. It is done almost entirely with a 5/8” bowl gouge working the inside from the bottom.This is a small vase( 4 1/4” diameter and 4” high ) made from mesquite and inlaid with a little sap wood showing turquoise in a few of the cracks that surfaced. It is finished with Danish Oil and then buffed and waxed.From the shots below it started with a mesquite log that was from a tree we cut 2 weeks ago.A tenon was turned on both ends and then the part for the bottom was parted off for plugging the bottom and holding the piece while finishing the top.

I made a jam chuck to fit the top and used it to turn off the bottom tenon to the bottom of the piece.
