Improved Dust Collection for Belt Sander on Total Shop

Improved Dust Collection for Belt Sander on Total ShopThe Total Shop was a short-lived “knock-off” of the well known ShopSmith back in the 1970's. It's a hog for room – a bit over six feet long – but makes a great sanding station with 6” x 48” belt, a 12” disc and good sized cast iron work tables. I also made a drum sander for “thicknessing” instrument wood which replaces the belt sander when needed – see my first project on LumberJocks at https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/291370.The belt sander has a 1.25 inch dust collection port (now plugged) and an open cast-aluminum chute which was marginally effective. This upgrade includes an enclosed shroud for the dust collector, and a 2.5 inch hose connection to move more air. 1/8” underlayment was attached to raise and extend the chute by tapping threaded holes for 10-32 machine screws in the cast aluminum. I can now connect directly to the overhead 4 inch duct with the single 2.5 inch overhead dropped shared by the router table, planer, and jointer in the center of the shop. The table saw, jointer and band saw for the Total Shop have been replaced newer stand alone tools, but the lathe, and horizontal drill are still used on occasion. Just can't get rid of this beast.
