Handcut Finger Joint Chisel Boxes

(from Lumberjocks.com)

Handcut Finger Joint Chisel BoxesBoxes number 9 & 10 in my recent box build. These two are my first handcut finger joint boxes. They are both made of cedar and thin plywood. Both were finished with Minwax Fruitwood stain, the lighter one was followed with clear shellac and the darker one had a wipe on finish (provincial stain, mineral spirits and poly) then coated with amber shellac. I put Johnson Paste Wax on both. I wanted to be able to tell them apart at a glance when reaching for chisels. The lighter one has my new narex chisel set in it and the darker one has my old, no-name beater chisels in it. They are my favorite because I changed the bevels on them down to almost 15 degrees with a 17 – 20 degree secondary bevel. I use them ALL the time and even though they are ugly, they are sharp.I was so happy to be finished and take the pics of these today.
First time I've used hardware in a handmade box… I had to laugh out loud because I think I put the hasps/buckles on upside down!!!The cedar inserts were fun to make. I had to think about it for a while. I left them unfinished in hopes that the cedar will draw moisture from the box and help with rust prevention. I also used CRC 3-36 on the chisels followed with JPW and I'm trying out some Zerust plastitabs that offgas a rust inhibitor.Glad these will never leave my shop. Thanks for looking
