This was a project in FWW #269.Michael Pekovich did his box with wenge and birds eye maple where as mine is made from quarter swarm white oak and vertical grain clear Douglas fir.
I had a board of q- dawn oak that had sat in a puddle some where and had darken considerably. I save it from the firewood bin at my local flooring store.
I wanted a darker colour so that it would match the FWW one, so I lightly fumed with household ammonia. Colour didn't darken as much as I liked but it was enough.
For the liner, I didn't have birds eye and again found some old growth, vertical grain Douglas fir in the firewood bin that I sized and selected the best grain for the inside.
I finished with oli-natura hard wax project oil, a vegetable wax oil finish.A fun little project, although not having the power tools to get this done soon drew out the process by a month or two!
