Applebutter Stirrers So for many years I've been wanting to start a family tradition of as many of us as possible getting together once a year to make applebutter. Maybe a year ago I started poking around to learn about this. After doing a fair amount of reading to learn the process I identified the basic components we would need. The stirrers sounded like a fun little place to start. I found a few popular designs so I decided to make all 3.I made our poles from ash and the paddles from hard maple/sugar maple. Two of them have the solid-type paddles with holes cut in. One of these is wider and the other less so. The other style has an open center.Because the paddles will be in the applebutter you don't want to finish them. I used a food-safe rub called wood butter. It's a combination of natural beeswax and walnut oil. I rubbed some of this into the handles and the paddles. It will dry and harden and prolong the wood a little bit. Some will likely come off of the paddles into the applebutter – but again there's just a very thin layer on the paddles and after all its beeswax and walnut oil.One of the people people I spoke with was Bill M. from firefighterontheside. He was very kind when I was first gathering information. I want to send another thank you to him for the tips early on. Thanks again Bill
