No wine .. it's time!

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

No wine .. it's time! The original image, on which the carving is based, came from a reprint of a series of water colors that were originally published in 1877 titled “Grapes and Grape Vines of California.” I was intrigued by the beauty of the “plates”, and chose one I felt would best be made into a carving. Originally I completed the one displayed then decided to to make a second copy and install them on bookends. I burned the second carving, mostly completed, (in frustration) when the cherry wood fractured at several fragile locations (because of the grain.) After several years I regretted that decision.
As with many of my carvings, especially those in hard woods, I prefer not to paint them and only use “neutral” stains and oils to protect them from weathering, etc.It is currently displayed at a place in the kitchen where I place opened wine for future consumption.

Stanley #66 Beading tool blade storage box

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Stanley #66 Beading tool blade storage boxI'd made a homemade scratch stock and a couple beading blades that I was never really all that happy with. So, I picked up an older Stanley #66 on eBay and bought the Veritas blade package for said scraper. The tool works great and I'm really happy with the slightly-thicker-that-OEM blades. But, now having a bunch of blades to keep track of, I figured I'd build a miniature chest to hold them in.I don't do too much really small work, so I learned a bunch about how to manipulate tools over small pieces of wood (ie: heavy use of double sided tape and larger boards to act as 'carriers' to be clamped in place). I also found, after my first failed attempt, that projects of this size are much safer built almost entirely using hand tools (I did use my smaller bandsaw for some of it, but mostly all hand tools). Being a hybrid woodworker (TM The Woodwhisper), I was pretty excited that this project turned out to be almost completely built without wearing earplugs! I used a router plane for the small grooves for the lid, a shoulder plane for all the miniature rabbets, a block plane for shaping the miters after milling the stock with a roughing plane and cutting the blanks to size with handsaws. And, of course, a small decorative bead on the lid using the new-to-me #66.The joints aren't nearly as tight as I'd expect from myself on a larger project, but it was really fun to do this whole thing (almost) completely with hand tools. I know that's a normal thing for some of you guys, but it's a new experience for me!!Scrap black walnut, finished with Danish oil. The lid slides into place and it's friction fit.

Box for Guitar Player

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Box for Guitar PlayerA dear friend was having her 50th birthday party last night. Her husband bought her a new Taylor acoustic guitar. She loves handmade gifts so I decided to make a box to hold picks, her capo, tuner and other related items.I milled down some cherry I had on hand and started. I found out her favorite color was purple and I just happened to have some purpleheart pieces that would work about perfect. An local laser engraver did the artwork for me.I added one coat of Watco cherry Danish oil and then two coats of General Finishes water based top coat. The box measures 10 X 7 X 4 1/2. Her husband suggested not using hinges so I used two rare earth magnets to hold it in place. they hold very well and makes it easy to open. It was given to her last night. Thanks for looking, Drew
