Sewing Cabinet with Inlaid Metal Tile Accents

I built this storage cabinet to hold my wife's sewing machine and related accessories and supplies. It's made of 3/4” maple plywood with solid maple trim. It's roughly 39” wide and tall and 12” deep and has two adjustable shelves.Each door is a plywood slab with two inlaid metal tiles, maple 'X' accent inlay strips, and maple trim. The door pulls are from Hickory Hardware (Streamline HH075280FO).The metal tiles are the focal point of the cabinet. We bought them about 16 years ago from Carina Works in Austin, Texas (sadly, no longer in business as far as I can tell), and we've always loved them. We used them for a wall art project for our kitchen. We replaced that display with a photo gallery wall earlier this year, and we're glad we could reuse a few of our favorite tiles.The finish is General Finishes Polyurethane Water Based Topcoat (flat sheen) toned with GF Water Based White Wash stain. For the black pieces, I used Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2x Flat Black spray paint.For construction details, please see my series of blog posts .Thanks for looking!

The Little Library

I was asked to make an item for a silent auction, as part of a fundraiser for the South Texas Book Festival in McAllen. This is what I came up with.The Little Library, named because the sides look like bookshelves full of books. This 208 segmented piece was quite fun, and very challenging to create.It stands 7 tall and 5.75 in diameter. It was constructed using 208 pieces total and I utilized Zebrawood, Curly Mahogany, and Walnut. Wall thickness is .25 and the inner depth is 4.The finial, base and books are Zebrawood, the lid and concave portion of the base is the Mahogany and the bookshelves are Walnut. I used clear lacquer for the finish.This is my first time making a lidded vessel and I think the lid gives the overall impression of an acorn. It was a fun project to work on.(This project was created, donated, and ended up selling for $85 at the fundraiser two years ago. I am just now getting around to posting it.)

Mesquite Fruit Bowl

I haven't spent much time out in the garage over the past year or so, creating sawdust. However, I have been working on a project for a good friend of mine. She asked if I could make something for a silent auction to benefit the McAllen South Texas Book Festival.I just put the finishing touches on it tonight and I love the way it turned out.Mesquite bowl, 10 across, 3.5 deep, wall thickness is 3/8, which means the bowl is solid, and heavy. The wood was turned on my Nova lathe, sanded to 1200 grit sand paper, and I used 3 coats of Tung oil finish, followed by the Beale polishing system to really bring out the shine.I purposely left a large swath of yellow sapwood along the side of the bowl. The sap wood is the trees growth ring, and is in stark contrast with the reddish hues of the darker heart wood.There was a large void inside this piece, but the vast majority was removed during the turning. Only one small natural crack remains on the rim. Mesquite is such a beautiful wood, very hard, and polishes up nicely.
