sycamore bowl burntThis a was a thin slab of sycamore that was freshly cut. I like the clear grain and thought that the contrast with a charred edge would highlight it. The shape was determined by the cut of the slice, so I didn't try to make it symmetrical and thought that it had a modern look. It was finished with thinned lacquer and a wax.

Family Plaque

Furnished content.
(from Lumberjocks.com)

Family PlaqueMy parents paid us a visit to see the new baby. While they were here I did some bonding with Dad.I told him that I wanted to make him a sign with our family name on it and that I wanted him to pick out the wood and the font. We went to MacBeath Hardwood in Berkeley (the original store) and he found some Santos Mahogany that he liked. I then took him to fonts.google.com and he picked out a nice font.I took the font into Inkscape and converted it to a vector path, modified the letters so that the “K” merged with the frame of the plaque, and then created cut paths. It only took about 2-3 hours of design and 3-4 hours to cut, sand, and finish.Dad was only here for a long weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and so I am so happy that I was able to give him something to take home that I made for him. He really likes it and that makes me really happy.Used the Shaper Origin to pocket out the letters, 91% isopropyl alcohol to prepare it for finish, Watco danish oil (single coat), and some Daddy Van's Lavender and Beeswax furniture finishing polish. The whole thing was cut with a 1/4” down-cut spiral bit (Spektra coated number from Amana Tool) in a single sitting. Some 220 grit sandpaper to spiff it up after the cutting. We won't talk about the fact that I spilled the Danish Oil all over the place (mineral spirits cleaned it right up).
