New Kleenex Box
Furnished content. (from Lumberjocks.com)
Judy wanted me to make her a wood Kleenex box for the larger/regular size box of tissues. I needed a fairly simple project to fit in with my other ones, plus had some wood from the two tables I am currently in the middle of.As you can see from the pictures that this will not fit a big box of tissue!!I had laminated some 6/4 maple, walnut and a strip of padauk that was just barely long enough to make the box. I ripped on the bandsaw, planed and sanded close to final thickness. Did not bring the sketch with me to the shop that morning. I knew the dimensions so cut the first long side. It was Exactly 0.5” too short; oops, dang, shoot So the big size box was out of the question. So the smaller Kleenex box was the plan going forward. The large boxes are shorter than the regular ones. So too short for the small box.The second picture shows my solution to increase the height. To form the mitred corners I laid out two strips of Frogs Tape a couple of inches longer than the four sides. Aligned the sides almost tight, put glue in the joints and folded it up. The mitres came out tight.Jude is happy with it and I am too. I still have a walnut piece large enough for a lid for my next attempt.Dave

I built this rack to hold my lumber based on plans I found on the internet. Will work out pretty well in my small shop, I think.

Second furniture project, plant stands w pine, poplar, sapele
Furnished content. (from Lumberjocks.com)
Pocket screws, easier than joinery but hard to get really square joints. The other main job was to see how to joint boards (small ones) without a jointer or table saw. Planing two boards side-by-side made them match pretty well. Though its hard not to over-do the last inch or two on the ends, leaving a gap when glued … now I know, could also make boards a little long and trim off the ends after glueing. And staining is still mysterious, need a lot more experimenting before putting it on final structure. That B&W poplar board just called out to me, still think its pretty good. And sapele is just a great wood. Wipe on poly, 4 or 5 coats, hope this is good enough for plant-stands. This was fun and lots of learning, and mainly, it just about justified all the $ of rearranging garage into workshop, to my in-house gardener AKA Management.)
